Mercury Retrograde on Vat Purnima
Vat Purnima Vrat falls on Jyeshtha Purnima as the Moon sits in Mula Nakshatra and Mercury stations retrograde in Cancer. The story of Savitri and Satyavan is not mythology today — it is the instruction manual.
Three Things Converge
Monday, June 29, 2026. Three things happen at once today, and they are not separate stories. They are the same story told from three different angles.
The Moon is full in Mula Nakshatra, the nakshatra of roots and dissolution. Mercury stations retrograde in Cancer, turning communication inward and reviving what was unfinished. And Vat Purnima Vrat asks us to fast, go to the banyan tree, and remember Savitri — a woman who followed the God of death into his own domain and argued her husband’s life back.
The thread connecting all three is the same: go to the root. Face what is real. Do not look away.
Vat Purnima: The Observance That Holds the Day Together
Vat Purnima is observed primarily in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, and it is one of the most significant vrats in the Vedic calendar for married women. It falls on Jyeshtha Purnima — this exact full moon — and its center is the Vat Vriksha, the banyan tree.
The banyan does not grow in a straight line. Its aerial roots descend from the branches back into the earth and become new trunks. It spreads, shelters, and regenerates. A banyan that has stood for centuries is not one tree — it is dozens of trunks born from the same original life. This is why it is the symbol chosen for this vrat: what is truly rooted cannot be killed.
The vrat is built around the story of Savitri and Satyavan. Satyavan was destined to die young — written in his fate. Savitri knew this when she chose him, and she chose him anyway. When Yama came to claim him, she followed. She did not collapse, she did not beg. She followed Yama into his own domain and argued: first for strength to follow dharma without a husband, then for sons, then — in a move that cornered Yama logically — for those sons to be born from Satyavan specifically. Yama relented. Satyavan lived.
Savitri did not win by accident. She won because she faced the deepest loss directly, stayed present in it, and held on to what was real with everything she had.
Today, the universe is asking something close to this of all of us.
The Sky Right Now
The Moon is in Dhanu (Sagittarius) in Mula Nakshatra for the entire day. Mula sits at the galactic center, and its deity is Nirriti — the goddess of dissolution, decay, and the clearing of what is false. Mula is not a comfortable nakshatra to have a full moon in. It does not let things look better than they are. If something in your life has been held together by habit, hope, or denial rather than genuine foundation, Mula Purnima puts it plainly in view.
Mercury stations retrograde in Karka (Cancer) today, in Punarvasu Nakshatra. Mercury and Jupiter are both in early Cancer — Mercury at approximately 2°, Jupiter at approximately 5° — and close enough to function as a conjunction. Jupiter expands whatever it touches. Mercury retrograde turns communication inward and distorts linear clarity. Together they produce a particular trap: the feeling that you have finally understood something, when what you are actually doing is remembering it differently. Insights that arrive with great certainty today deserve to be written down and revisited in a week, not acted upon immediately.
The Sun is in Mithuna (Gemini) in Ardra Nakshatra, directly opposite the full Moon. Ardra is Rahu’s nakshatra and Rudra’s domain — the nakshatra of the storm, of thought that cannot sit still, of disruption in service of truth. Sun in Ardra opposing Moon in Mula is a full-moon axis that refuses easy answers. The mind will dig. Let it dig usefully.
Mars holds in Vrishabha (Taurus), patient and physical. Saturn is in Meena (Pisces) in Revati — quiet, structural, watching whether your actions match your stated values. Neither planet pushes for dramatic movement today. The whole sky is configured for depth, not speed.
The Vedic Almanac
- Tithi: Shukla Purnima — the full moon, auspicious for devotion, holy bathing, charity, and fasting
- Nakshatra: Mula (Ketu / Nirriti) — all day; transition happens in the pre-dawn hours of June 30
- Yoga: Shukla through the morning, transitioning to Brahma in the afternoon — a narrow window of constructive focus; use the HoraNow app for the precise time in your location
- Karana: Vishti (Bhadra) through the afternoon — inauspicious for new starts and major transactions; Bava takes over by evening
- Vrats & Observances: Vat Purnima Vrat, Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat, Kabirdas Jayanti, Anvadhan
- Ganda Moola: Active all day. Mula is one of the six Ganda Moola nakshatras. Traditional guidance avoids initiating new ventures, ceremonies, or significant purchases while the Moon transits here.
Vishti Karana and Ganda Moola together deliver the same message: this is a day of completion and devotion, not launch.
Your Playbook for Today
Do this:
- Observe Vat Purnima if it is part of your tradition. Fast through the day, go to a banyan tree, tie the sacred thread, circumambulate, and offer prayer with the Savitri-Satyavan katha. If no banyan is accessible, a sincere fast and a reading of the story carry the same intention. Jyeshtha Purnima is also associated with Vishnu and Lakshmi — holy bathing, charity, and lamp-lighting are meritorious for all.
- Use the Brahma Yoga window. The afternoon brings a narrow pocket of constructive focus in an otherwise inward-looking day. Use it for creative planning, careful thinking, or any task that requires presence. Check the HoraNow app for the window in your timezone.
- Do the Mercury retrograde work. Old conversations, unresolved decisions, and unfinished drafts are precisely what retrograde Mercury in Cancer wants you to revisit. Not to close them necessarily — to understand them more honestly.
- Sit with what the full moon shows you. Mula Purnima will surface what you have been propping up. Do not look away. Write it down and name it plainly. That is the beginning of doing something real about it.
Watch out for:
- False certainty. The Mercury-Jupiter conjunction generates compelling narratives that feel like breakthroughs. They may be real — but verify them before acting. The retrograde will revise what the full Moon illuminates.
- Power games. Mula’s intensity and Nirriti’s energy can pull people into control dynamics disguised as spiritual urgency. If someone is using today’s emotional charge to pressure or manipulate, notice it and step back.
- New starts. Ganda Moola, Vishti Karana, and Mercury stationing retrograde are three separate advisories against initiation. If it can start tomorrow, let it start tomorrow.
- Excess. Purnima amplifies everything the Moon governs — feeling, intuition, appetite. Moderation today is structural, not a suggestion.
The Bottom Line
Jyeshtha Purnima in Mula does not reward building. It rewards honesty about what is real and what was never as solid as it looked. Savitri did not celebrate at the banyan tree. She fasted, she faced the worst, and she came back with what mattered. That is the invitation today. Observe the fast, reflect, and let the full moon do its work. What survives the uprooting was real. What doesn’t, wasn’t meant to be.
