Saturday of the Serpent-Saint: Dahi Handi, Goga Navami, and a Moon Crossing into Mithuna
Krishna Navami lands on a Shaniwara with the Moon stepping from Mrigashira into Ardra. Jupiter exalted, Saturn retrograde, Bhadra rises across the West overnight.
The morning after Janmashtami belongs to Krishna’s mischief. Across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the wider subcontinent, neighborhoods ring with drums and human pyramids as Dahi Handi is broken - the butter pot the child Krishna could never reach, now suspended impossibly high for his devotees to claim together. Today also marks the veneration of Goga Ji, a quieter, older festival for the warrior-saint, cherished as a shield against snakes and the fears that move in the dark. Two protectors on the same day: one against pride, one against venom.
The ninth tithi of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight), Krishna Navami, is a Rikta - an “empty” day that strips comfort away and asks the practitioner to walk the discipline of nine. Combined with a Shaniwara (Saturday), the day carries a doubled weight of karma and structure. Devotees observing Shravana Shanivar - the Saturday fast within the sacred Shravana month of the Amanta calendar, which corresponds to Bhadrapada in the Purnimanta count (Vikram Samvat 2083, Shaka Samvat 1948) - turn toward Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) for prosperity or Maruti (Hanuman) for relief from Shani’s harder lessons. The cosmos itself sits in Sharad Ritu under Dakshinayana - the inward-turning half of the year, when the day asks for harvest and consolidation rather than expansion.
A Moon Crossing a Threshold
The Moon begins the day in Mrigashira, the “deer’s head” nakshatra ruled by Mars and Soma - a gentle asterism of searching and curious pursuit. By evening it crosses into Ardra, ruled by Rahu: the storm, the tear, the roaring Rudra. Mrigashira asks “where?” Ardra asks “what must be torn down so the new can grow?” India and the Pacific see the transition late in the evening; readers in Europe and the Americas already wake under Ardra’s rain-charged air.
The Planetary Posture
Three planets hold dignified ground today - a rare configuration:
- Jupiter is exalted (uchcha) in Karka (Cancer), seated in Ashlesha. Wisdom, generosity, and protective instinct are amplified - a teaching day, not a hustling day.
- The Sun is in its own sign (swakshetra) in Simha (Leo), in Purva Phalguni. Mercury is combust right beside the Sun, so speech and intellect defer to solar authority. Move carefully with words; let the Sun lead.
- Venus is in its own sign (swakshetra) in Tula (Libra), in Chitra. Relationships, art, and aesthetic sense are stabilized.
Saturn is retrograde in Meena (Pisces) at the edge of Revati - a Saturn reviewing karmic accounts. Rahu and Ketu are also retrograde, in Dhanishtha and Magha respectively. Mars sits with the Moon in Mithuna in Punarvasu - sharp and quick, lending momentum to action. On a Shaniwara, with Saturn itself in retreat, the day asks for patience over force.
The Moon sits at 1°01’ Mithuna at noon, close enough to the Vrishabha boundary that India and the Pacific wake with a Taurus Moon while the West already has a Gemini Moon - a small difference, but noticeably felt.

Your Playbook for Today
Lead with Jupiter’s benediction. Avoid sharp speech (combust Mercury beside an unconfused Sun). Do not force contracts across the line - Saturn is retrograde and reviewing.
India & South Asia Do: Gather community for Dahi Handi and offer prayers to Goga Ji for protection of family and livestock. Honor Shravana Shanivar with a Balaji or Hanuman vrat. Use the late-evening Vidaal Yoga window for restorative work. Watch out: Mercury is combust - keep announcements, signatures, and sensitive conversations to after the Sun has set. Avoid leading with ego in group settings.
UK & Europe Do: Use the pre-dawn Bhadra window on Sep 06 for sleep, fasting, or ritual protection rather than new ventures. Lean on Jupiter for study and counsel. Watch out: The Vajra→Siddhi cutoff comes early in the morning. If you have a sharp conversation or signing to do, do it before late morning, before the day’s softening sets in.
North America East Do: Channel the Bhadra window (late evening through pre-dawn Sep 06) into rest, prayer, or ancestral work rather than launching. Jupiter supports a long, calm study session in the morning. Watch out: Vyatipata arrives at midnight - a “falling star” yoga that exposes hypocrisy. Don’t sign what you can’t stand behind.
North America West Do: Treat the day as Dashami from mid-morning onward - fit for completion and clean endings. Let Bhadra (active late evening through pre-dawn Sep 06) close the day for you; sleep through it. Watch out: Siddhi gives accomplishment but Vyatipata follows by evening. Wrap up the day’s work before sunset; let the falling star yoga review without your interference.
Australia & Pacific Do: Mirror India’s day - Krishna Navami, Dahi Handi celebrations in community, Goga Ji puja. Morning Mrigashira energy suits gentle research and travel planning. Watch out: Moon crosses Vrishabha into Mithuna by midday - moods and appetites shift. Eat grounding food early; lighter fare later.
The Bottom Line
A Shaniwara with exalted Jupiter and a Sun that knows itself is rare furniture. The day is built for teaching, protecting, and completing the discipline of Navami - ninefold, stripped down, honest. Two saint-protectors stand on either side: Krishna against pride, Goga against venom. The Moon moves from Mrigashira’s seeking into Ardra’s tear, and most of the planet will cross that threshold today.
Move slowly, speak less than you think you should, and let the retrograde Saturn audit what retrograde Rahu has set in motion.
